Fast-growing home improvements business, The Build Directory, is flying the flag for job creation after taking on its latest apprentice to work alongside its skilled workforce of builders and fitters.
The Stockton-based firm, which is fast becoming the local name for an extensive range of home improvements, has taken on 17-year-old Shaun Rooney as an apprentice bricklayer.
Shaun, from Middlesbrough, is learning all aspects of building as part of a team based at Joseph Parr’s premises off Portrack Lane but carrying out work for customers across Teesside and the wider North-East, North Yorkshire and beyond.
Alisdair Beveridge, managing director of The Build Directory, said he was keen to give Shaun an opportunity to learn his trade after taking him on placement from support services business Carillion.
He said: “I’m a big believer in the potential for apprenticeships to give opportunities to young people that might not otherwise have been there, while there’s obviously the chance for us to create and mould future employees.
“Not everybody is a square peg in a square hole. The classroom or university route into work doesn’t suit everyone. The country is crying out for new homes so we need builders while The Build Directory is also about helping people to maintain the homes we’re already got.
“Shaun is learning from experienced tradesmen everything from laying bricks and basic site management to customer care and liaising with suppliers. He goes to Middlesbrough College on day release to learn the theory too, but it’s actually doing the job that will help him most.
“If he works hard, keeps learning and improving then there’s naturally an opportunity for him to make the grade and become a fully-fledged member of our team. Hopefully one day he’ll be the guy training our future apprentices.”
The Build Directory’s home improvement work includes windows and doors, conservatories and orangeries, kitchens and bathrooms, garage doors, driveways and patios, central heating systems and boilers.
