A Redcar Community Interest Company, which has received the support from Redcar & Cleveland Borough, is set to launch its services this month.

The Ethical Lettings Agency, which is based in Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart, will work with landlords to help manage and advertise their properties, as well as tenants who are looking for a place to rent.

The company will create a grant programme with its profits solely for the use of community groups and projects in Redcar and Cleveland.

The council, working with the lettings agency, has provided business development support, workshops and a network of other companies within the borough.

With plans to create jobs and apprenticeships for local people, Carla Keegans (pictured above), director of The Ethical Lettings Agency, hopes the company will go national.

Ms Keegans, who has returned to her hometown Redcar, after 16 years working across the UK housing sector, said: “There are hundreds of thousands of landlords and over nine million people now living in privately rented homes, and yet there is no agency offering what our company will do.

“Our ethos is to be transparent with tenants and landlords, where we will provide brilliant services, written agreements and have no hidden costs.”

She added: “I have been working with the council who have been excellent with their support in helping me build a social enterprise that will deliver much needed services and investment back into our community.”

Redcar & Cleveland Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, Cllr Dale Quigley said: “We are delighted businesses old and new are taking up residency at the Heart, especially innovative companies like The Ethical Lettings Agency.

“Ms Keegans’ plan to create jobs and apprenticeships in Redcar is fantastic for our local economy, and hopefully we will see this trend continue for other businesses in the Heart and in the borough.”
