The North-East’s largest landlord group has appointed a leading figure to take the helm of its board.
George Garlick will help direct the future of the Tees-based Thirteen Group after becoming the new chair of its board of directors.
The 60-year-old was welcomed into the role after retiring from his position as chief executive of Durham County Council following 20 years as a local authority chief executive.
In his new post, Mr Garlick will help shape the future direction of Thirteen and its partner companies of Erimus Housing, Housing Hartlepool, Tees Valley Housing, Tristar Homes and Thirteen Care and Support.
Mr Garlick, who lives in Norton, hopes to bring his knowledge of the public sector, as well as private sector development, to Thirteen, alongside helping to forge closer links across the region and nationally.
He said: “I am delighted to be working with the Thirteen Group as the Tees Valley is where my heart is and I am really pleased to be contributing to the largest social landlord group in the area.
“It is a really interesting and challenging time for the housing sector and social housing in particular and this is a great opportunity to help make a big difference at this time. I can hopefully bring my experience to contribute to the continuing success of Thirteen.”
Mr Garlick, who was previously also chief executive of Stockton Council, started his career as a teacher before qualifying as a solicitor and worked for a number of local authorities prior to coming to the North-East.
Married with a 12-year-old son, he hopes his retirement from full-time work will also give him the chance to spend more time watching his youngster play a range of sports including cricket – although his wife intends to encourage him to brush up his cooking skills even further!
Thirteen chief executive Alison Thain – pictured (above) with Mr Garlick – added: “We are thrilled to welcome such a well-respected and experienced figure in the region to head up the Board at Thirteen.
“While these are challenging times for all housing providers, I am confident that George’s wealth of knowledge, understanding and skills will help guide the organisation successfully into the future.
“I would also like to thank Mike Clark, who is stepping down as chair, for all his commitment and dedication in helping take us this far as the Thirteen Group.”
