A young business manager is set for his next challenge after driving significant growth at a Tees storage firm.

Joe Nicholson has exceeded targets at Billingham-based Box Clever since taking on the role of business manager a year ago.

The facility is almost at capacity with hundreds of caravans, trailers and storage containers securely stored at the 2 hectare site with an additional 100 containers introduced at Easter.

Now, 20-year-old Joe is planning his next business venture, an import and export service targeting online traders which will be supported by parent company The Nicholson Group.

He said: “When I was appointed business manager I realised it was quite a responsibility for a teenager. But it’s hands on responsibility and the kind of challenge I enjoy.

“I’m now looking at how I can diversify Box Clever and looking at online traders, particularly those who require some storage support. It’s a growing sector and our 24 hour secure access means we bring peace of mind for customers.”

Joe, from Sadberge near Darlington, was taken on as a business administration apprentice at Box Clever’s parent company The Nicholson Group in 2014 and initially worked within its 55,000 sq ft warehouse. But he soon graduated to the office managing pallet deliveries across the UK before being appointed business manager of Box Clever last year.

The Box Clever facility has capacity for up to 500 caravans with security features including automated gate access operated by key fobs, an enhanced CCTV system and flood lighting. Customers hire the storage units for all kinds of uses including businesses for filing of old documents, homeowners, market traders, rock bands and vintage car and motorcycle enthusiasts.

Growth at Box Clever has been attributed to positive movement in the housing market, as people look to move house again as well as small businesses who require additional space for products or documents.

An additional 100 brand new containers arrived at the site in April and the firm is considering expanding operations to a second site near Darlington.

Managing Director David Nicholson said: “Joe has shown great potential and determination since he joined us as an apprentice and certainly has an entrepreneurial spirit.

“We trusted him to grow Box Clever and he has successfully expanded the business by targeting new customers and sectors and will support him in developing both the business and his own career.”
