Pipe up for a career that fits

Youngsters with an interest in engineering are being encouraged to consider global career opportunities as pipefitters in the process and oil and gas industries.

Experts at Middlesbrough College are helping to nurture the next generation of international pipefitting specialists in Teesside, and say there are quality career opportunities to be had in key industries.

The current cohort of Level 3 pipefitting students are being trained in real life environments within Middlesbrough College’s industry-leading STEM Centre.

Lecturer Andrew Lonsdale has praised their efforts while calling for more women to consider the training.

Andrew, a former employer of global gas and chemicals firm Air Product & Chemicals, said: “Pipefitting is a fantastic career, and right now there are opportunities for young people in the chemicals, oil and gas and process industries.

“The students here at Middlesbrough College are learning by doing the tasks they would carry out on a real site – the type of hands-on experience that employers need.

“Pipefitters play such an important role in keeping many of our key industries running.”

Inside the real life working environment of the STEM Centre, the level 3 students learn how to cut, prepare and bend pipework – just as they would do on the job.

Middlesbrough College learners are led through practical and theoretical sessions on fabricating the type of pipework which is the infrastructure of Teesside’s process and chemicals firms.

Andrew added: “The STEM Centre is second to none when it comes to providing hands-on experience for our pipefitters.

“In classes they can be welding, building and maintaining systems that are identical to those in the field.

“Employers tell us that genuine experience is what they’re looking for, and that’s what guides our learning.

“We’re keen to hear from firms that are considering taking on apprentices. The college can run these apprenticeships and the positive impact on your business could be fantastic.”

Student DJ Coogan commented: “I’m looking forward to working in the oil and gas industry and I need an apprenticeship to help me reach my ambition.

“Middlesbrough College is helping me achieve that. We’ve been fabricating and fitting pipes into the STEM which I think no other training centre could give me.”
