Chadwicks Inn Maltby has this week retained its Michelin Bib Gourmand award and two AA Rosettes but the Teesside eaterie is serious about wine as well as its award-winning food…

Is there anywhere on Teesside quite like Chadwicks Inn? Not only does it boast more prestigious awards than any other restaurant in the region but the Maltby eaterie has also gained a reputation for its award-winning wines too.

Such is the quality of its mouth-watering food that Chadwicks remains the only restaurant in the area awarded the prestigious Michelen Bib Gourmand, symbolising restaurants listed in the Michelin Guide offering exceptional good food at moderate prices.

With two AA Rosettes and a listing in the Michelin Guide for the past seven years, it’s little wonder that the Chadwicks brand is so strongly associated with the quality of its food. But just a glance through their eclectic wine list tells you that food isn’t their only priority.

Their handpicked wines include many award-winning numbers, with monthly specials to allow customers to try a glass or two of something they have not previously tried. Unlike any you’ll find elsewhere, the constantly changing wine list is the inspiration of three men.

First, two of the owners, Gary Gill and Lee Tolley, are studious wine connoisseurs with Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) qualifications. And Chadwicks work closely with Great Aytonbased Mike Sharman, a local fine wine supplier, who hosts many of the Wine Tasting Evenings that have now established a regular following to ensure sell-out events time after time.

Supporters of Middlesbrough FC will recognise Gary’s name as a Boro star of the 1980s when Tony Mowbray, Gary Pallister and Bernie Slaven were among his teammates. Now he is a senior member of Aitor Karanka’s Premier League recruitment team, but he retains a keen interest in wine at Chadwicks.

Sharing wine selection duties with supplier Mike, Gary says: “We would never claim to have an exhaustive list, but we work hard to ensure we can offer our customers a wide range of interesting, quirky wines, as well as those that everyone would expect to see on a good list.

“Our range of wines by the glass runs into double figures – if you ask nicely, Lee may even open a bottle of something for you to try!

“Everything we do is underpinned by fantastic food and we firmly believe that our wines complement the amazing food that we offer.”

Their regular Wine Tasting Evenings have become famous for showcasing a range of wines, with their champagne events proving, if anything, even more popular.

Gary explains: “On Teesside, Chadwicks is now very much the place to come for wine evenings. We’ve been delighted to welcome visiting winemakers from overseas to host some of the events, including visitors from La Báscula in Spain and Yalumba in Australia this year, while we have Valentina Adami from the Prà Winery in Verona doing her only UK tasting evening with us, where there’ll be an opportunity to sample some fantastic Italian wines, matched as always by our award-winning food.”

Other Chadwicks wine events are hosted by Mike Sharman, entertaining and informing guests in equal measures with his detailed knowledge and fun facts.
