A Teesside make-up artist who swapped building maintenance for beauty salons has scooped a national title.
Gemma Rimmington from Guisborough was named Freelance Make Up Specialist of the Year at the English Hair and Beauty Awards.
Gemma said: “I was delighted to have made it to the final so to find out I’d won was just incredible.”
It’s a far cry from Gemma’s original career – as a facilities manager responsible for health and safety and managing contractors.
She spent almost three years building her business while continuing to work full time and in June last year she made the bold decision to reduce her hours in facilities management so she could focus on becoming a full time freelance make-up artist – and she’s glad she did!
A handful of professional make-up courses provided the foundation she needed.
They were followed up with a creative/special fx make-up course and time spend working with North East based Activate Theatre group. It was then that Gemma discovered her exceptional talent for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
An example of this was when she cajoled her husband Neil into letting her loose with special effects make-up to turn him into a zombie.
After uploading those pictures online she received a message from Hollywood star Vincent M Ward from ‘The Walking Dead’ fame who said he really liked the pictures and he wished her luck in her make-up career.
Gemma said: “Neil and I are big fans of The Walking Dead so to get a message from Vincent M Ward was out of this world, one of the real highlights of the last few years.”
As well as creative make-up and bridal make-up, Gemma is also carrying out workshops at a transgender support group and is receiving some fantastic feedback.
