‘Topping out’ ceremony at £23.2m Acklam hospital site

Consultants and hospital staff traded in their suits and scrubs to celebrate a milestone in the construction of Tees Valley Hospital, a new multi-million pound facility currently being built on the grounds of the Acklam Hall Estate.

The ‘topping out’ ceremony saw hospital staff from Tees Valley Treatment Centre, Tolent Construction, P+HS Architects and special guests mark the completion of construction on the exterior of the new hospital building.

Tolent Construction are busy working on the windows and internal fittings ahead of the opening in January 2018.

The £23.2m two-storey hospital which will be on the door step of the Tees Valley community, will host staff and a range of services from the existing Tees Valley Treatment Centre, currently based in the One Centre building in Middlesbrough’s town centre.

The 19-bedroom hospital will include three laminar flow theatres, an endoscopy suite, overnight inpatient en-suite bedrooms, 12 day patient pods, outpatient department with diagnostic imaging department, including x-ray, ultrasound and mobile MRI, physiotherapy unit & rehabilitation gym and free on-site parking.

Donna Thornton, general manager at Tees Valley Treatment Centre, who is pleased that the build is on schedule and progress is being made, said: “The ceremony comes when the last brick or beam is put into place and it’s very exciting to be able to mark this special occasion. The next few months will fly by and in December we will have a building that we love.”

Ms Thornton, who is currently looking for outstanding healthcare staff, continued: “We will be expanding on the services and procedures currently being provided at Tees Valley Treatment Centre to meet the communities’ high demand and are looking for additional staff to support this new venture.

“Consultants, nurses, ODPs, physiotherapists, radiographers, administrators and a wide range of support staff roles will be available creating a further 50 new jobs.”

James Almond, associate at P+HS Architects, added: “We are delighted to mark the ongoing progress of the new Ramsay Health Care UK Tees Valley Hospital, which is currently in construction at Acklam Hall.

“We are looking forward to commissioning and launching the facility in early 2018, following completion of the development and build programme later this year. The new hospital facility is one part of the master plan for the redevelopment of the site by Acklam Hall Developments.”

Guests were treated to a tour of the new hospital and a preview of their new workplace, followed by afternoon tea at Acklam Hall.

The hospital, operated by Ramsay Health Care UK, represents the latest phase of the bespoke patient centred health village, establishing community based healthcare, providing surgical, medical and assessment services on the grounds of Middlesbrough’s only grade one listed building.
