Psyche is marking 35 years at the heart of Middlesbrough’s retail and fashion offering with a week of celebrations.

The award-winning Psyche story began in 1982 when Steve Cochrane opened Sliced Tomatoes on Station Road in Redcar.

Named after Steve’s own “punk meets new romantic” band, which failed to hit the big time, the former ICI engineer and oil rigger decided to make and sell the type of clothes he loved to wear.

He’s since come a long way from tie-dying his own T-shirts and spraying bleach on jeans in his front room.

The business grew and evolved and the Linthorpe Road store, which opened in 2002, offers an instore and online shopping experience with its hand-picked selection of well over 200 established brands and emerging designers includes the likes of Moncler, Dries Van Noten, Paul Smith, Aquascutum, Armani, Versace and many more.

Events planned for the week include competitions with leading designers, an appearance by Middlesbrough FC players (Thursday October 5, 4-5pm), beauty advice, tattoo advice with Skins and Needles (Friday October 6) and ‘80s music.

In addition, on Saturday (October 7) between 12pm and 4pm, Psyche will take over Garnet Street adjacent to the store and host its own pop up ‘Pip’ market, in partnership with the hugely popular Middlesbrough Orange Pip market.

The marquee will feature a DJ, food and drink demonstrations including Orange Pip market favourites The Little Korean Sushi, Pie Jackers and the Little Ice Cream Bike.

Mr Cochrane “I’m a proud Teessider and to have been in business in my home area for 35 years is fantastic.

“It’s been a rollercoaster ride during which Psyche has won numerous awards, had its own TV show, worked with some of the best designers around, extended the building and introduced online sales, which is a significant growth area for the business.

“I want to share the anniversary with my staff, customers and the whole of Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas and there’s lots planned, with opportunities to win fantastic designer clothes, music, food and drink and different activities throughout the week.

“I’m also delighted to welcome some of the Boro players to join in the celebrations. Psyche has been the official suit supplier to the football club for a number of years. We are also a Platinum partner of the club and proud to support our local team.

“All in all it’s going to be a great week, but we never stand still and will be looking towards the next 35 years!”
