The HS Interiors Bathroom and Kitchen Sale runs until Sunday March 4, as one of Teesside’s best-known businesses continues to provide outstanding service from the heart of Middlesbrough nearly 100 years after its foundation.
With its origins established in architectural and building ironmongery, Hardware Supply provides solutions for commercial and residential property development under its two departments – HS Interiors, the bathrooms and kitchens specialist, and Hardware Supply Co, specialising in building and architectural ironmongery.
Formed in 1920 when Teesside’s shipyards and steelworks were helping to build the world, the company is now the epitome of a 21st Century business, providing bespoke, contemporary services and products to customers from across the region and beyond.
Under the careful leadership of managing director Paul Faulkner, the family-run business retains the same dedication to providing a personalised service that Paul’s grandfather Algie and father Doug held close to their hearts.
“We’ve come a long way since the early days of Hardware Supply in Marsh Road in Middlesbrough, where I spent my weekends as an eight-year-old helping out my father and grandfather,” says Paul.
Back in the 1950s and ‘60s, the firm boasted the largest fireplace display in the north of England, and they then became the name for Jacuzzi baths. “We were Jacuzzi’s biggest UK customer and apparently in their top three across the whole of Europe,” recalls Paul. “Teesside had more Jacuzzi baths that anywhere else in the entire country!”
But Middlesbrough and Teesside have evolved, as has the company. Paul explains: “We started supplying many kitchens to local developers and contractors modernising property in the early ‘70s, which led to expansion, the formation of HS Interiors and our relocation to St John’s Gate on North Ormesby Road in 1986.”
HS Interiors offers bespoke bathroom and kitchens to suit any home and lifestyle with services covering technical drawings, 3D designs, project management, full installation and supply only.
It’s a philosophy that ensures HS can always deliver the perfect kitchen or bathroom designed specifically to meet each customer’s personal requirements from start to finish.
“The market has become more competitive,” says Paul. “But we’ve remained true to our independent roots, giving the customer what they want and a bespoke service that other larger firms can’t match.”
HS pride themselves in offering only the highest quality products, working with reputable brands and specialist local craftsmen.
Their impressive two-storey Middlesbrough showroom is home to more than 60 stunning bathroom and kitchen displays showcasing leading products sourced from across Europe including Duravit, Jacuzzi, Vitra, Imperial, Kudos, Majestic, Hansgrohe, Aqualisa, Utopia and many more.
Their innovative kitchen displays featuring quality German furniture from Rational, Neff appliances, Franke sinks and a range of Granite, Silestone and Corian worktops.
Paul explains: “It’s a complicated industry and brand awareness for bathroom and kitchen products is ranked lower than other retail brands. Our customers tell us how confusing it becomes trawling through the various websites, not knowing where to start.
“So it’s our job to educate and guide customers based on what they are looking to achieve in their space, which is why we invest in our showroom displays, year on year.”
Employing 27 local people across the company, Paul is keen to highlight the fact that quality doesn’t have to be expensive.
“We’re mid to high end,” he says, “And sometimes the perception is that means we’re expensive too.
“The truth is that, on a like-for-like basis, we’re no more expensive than others – and can provide a personalised service that’s unsurpassed.”
During the initial consultation customers can bring their measurements into the showroom for one of HS Interiors’ in-house experts to discuss the possibilities of what can be achieved, with home consultations conducted for those wishing to create customised installations.
“Ultimately, we’re committed to giving our customers what they want,” adds Paul. “Many think they can only replace their current fittings, but we strive for the optimum use of space and unique design, even if it’s not the easiest task for our fitters.”
“We’re straight-talking and honest about what is achievable. For those seeking expert advice, we’re happy to share it. If we think something is a waste of money, we’ll say so.”
It’s such a no-nonsense commitment that has helped HS Interiors build a long-standing reputation not only with domestic customers but with many commercial clients too, from the self-employed to major house developers.
The commitment to quality and service that has become the hallmark of HS Interiors also runs through the team at the adjoining Hardware Supply Co. From the shop trade counter to the van drivers delivering to building sites across Teesside and beyond, their expertise in architectural and building ironmongery is second to none.
From one-man bands to national house builders such as Taylor Wimpey, not to mention many local councils and property developers, Hardware Supply Co is a trusted name.
Paul explains: “When it comes to hardware, we want our clients and customers to have the widest of choices but we also want them to know that the product they buy is up to the job.
“We’ve worked with many of our suppliers for decades and we’ve done so because we trust the quality of their design and manufacture, ensuring that our customers will not be disappointed with the products they purchase from us.
“Across both HS Interiors and Hardware Supply Co, our name stands for quality and service. There are no half measures on that. Whether purchasing a five-star bathroom or a bag of nails, our customers know what they get from us every time.”
