Owners of the most-decorated restaurant on Teesside are celebrating again after retaining a prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand award for a third successive year.
Chadwicks Inn Maltby is again the region’s only restaurant to receive the much sought-after accolade, exclusive to Michelin Guide-listed restaurants offering exceptionally good food at moderate prices.
With two AA Rosettes and a listing in the Michelin Guide for the past eight years, it’s little wonder that many associate the Chadwicks brand with the highest standards of fine dining – and yet co-owner Helen Gill believes the restaurant remains “an undiscovered gem” for many Teessiders.
“We are delighted to have retained the Bib Gourmand award,” said Helen, who co-owns the 2AA Rosette restaurant with husband Gary, Lee Tolley and head chef Steven Lawford. “The judges turn up, dine and leave without giving you any notice, so it’s about ensuring our standards are consistently high every day.
“It’s recognition for all the hard work we put in behind the scenes. You have to travel to Newcastle to find the next nearest restaurant with a Bib Gourmand, so we’re proud to be setting the very highest of standards.”
Asked how they do it, Helen replied: “First of all, we have a great chef in Steven. There are certain things the Bib Gourmand judges look for in terms of menu and produce. Clearly, they feel we’re hitting the mark.
“But front of house has to be high level too, so it’s about the all-round experience without being overly formal.”
For a flavour of the mouth-watering dishes being served up at Chadwicks Inn, a typical starter may be Whitby Crab and Caviar Tart, Spiced Plum Tomato Dressing and Tarragon Mayonnaise, while a pick from their delicious main courses is Roast Gressingham Duck Breast and Duck Leg Pastry, Dauphinoise Potato and Butternut Squash.
Despite the latest accolade, Helen believes Chadwicks remains undiscovered to many locals.
“I think we do go under the radar at times,” she said. “We’re three minutes from Ingleby Barwick and just down the road from Yarm, Stokesley and Middlesbrough but we’re off the beaten track, so I think some do forget we’re here.
“But for anyone who wants a high end offering that’s relaxed, cosy and never stuffy, we’re confident they’ll love Chadwicks Inn.”
