Tech Talk – why we’re backing the digital sector

The Tees region’s digital sector is flying – but much of the success often goes under the radar. All that will change with the launch of the Tees Tech Awards. Tees Business co-editor Dave Allan reveals more and explains why the event’s sponsors will be among the biggest winners…

There are an estimated 250 to 300 digital firms of varying sizes in the Tees Valley region. Some, such as Visualsoft, court the spotlight and rightly win the plaudits for their innovative work and working practices. It’s fair to say others are an unknown quantity, while others are simply unknown – at least beyond their own small business circle.

That’s why Tees Business is organising the inaugural Tees Tech Awards – to allow this amazing range of techy firms to remove their cloak of invisibility and stand in the publicity spotlight. We love promoting local businesses – it’s what we do. But we can’t wait to engage with a sector that has never engaged with us as much as we’d like.

Maybe it’s because they’re doing national and even international deals, rather than boasting Tees Valley clients, so they see little point in promoting themselves locally. Maybe it’s because they think a printed magazine – albeit one that’s published digitally, boasts a thriving website and a weekly enews – isn’t their market in this digital age. Or maybe they’re just getting on with being techies and forget to shout about their achievements, as so many others do.

Whatever the answer – and it’s probably a combination of the three – we can’t wait to shine a light on their achievements. Like the inaugural Tees Businesswomen Awards, the Tees Tech Awards will be a memorable affair. And they could be transformational for some of those who win. Just being shortlisted can give untold publicity.

We’ll be launching details of how to enter in the near future – but there’s plenty of time for that, as the event will be held in April 2020.

But right now there’s a fantastic opportunity for local companies and institutions to raise their profile across the Tees digital sector. We already have four sponsors, with the awards’ co-founders DigitalCity and Digital Middlesbrough leading the way.

The awards will be held in association with both, and they’ll present the big award on the night of the Tees Tech Company of the Year. We’re grateful for the professional input of DigitalCity’s David Dixon and Digital Middlesbrough’s Dan Watson in helping us get this far.

To help us make the inaugural Tees Tech Awards the success we know it can be, we need local firms to step forward to sponsor categories and join Punch Robson Solicitors, Jacksons Law Firm and Communicate.

The remaining categories will be snapped up fast so don’t delay. We can guarantee a whole range of benefits while also putting you in touch with so many potential new digital contacts.
