Vital support for Middlesbrough businesses is being rolled out to safeguard jobs across the town as the Coronavirus response gathers pace.
Middlesbrough Council is playing a key role in delivering the Government’s programme of grant and rate relief support as businesses face up to the ongoing UK-wide shut-down.
Grants totalling more than £4 million have been processed to date for more than 400 businesses, with a further 900 in the pipeline.
Most retail, hospitality and leisure-based businesses in England now qualify for 100% retail rates relief for the next 12 months.
Businesses entitled to the 100% retail relief operating from premises with a rateable value of between £15,001 and £50,999 will receive a £25,000 grant, while grants of £10,000 will be awarded to any small business eligible to Small Business Rates Relief.
Nursery ratepayers in properties on the Early Years Register will also be given a rates holiday for 2020/21.
Middlesbrough Council will contact all eligible businesses, but those who think they are eligible can fill in and submit an online claim form.
To further support businesses, charges in all Council pay and display car parks and on-street parking meters have been suspended to support any key workers still needing to come into town.
Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: “Middlesbrough’s businesses are the town’s life blood, and we’re working with them to do everything we can to protect jobs.
“One of our biggest tasks right now is to get this money out there to those who really need it as soon as we possibly can.
“Safeguarding jobs is paramount and we do that by helping to ensure businesses can survive this turmoil.
“These are hugely challenging times, but we will get through this together.”
