Cleveland Cable Company has continued its expansion with the purchase of a 4.1-acre former brownfield site near Northampton on which the Middlesbrough-headquartered firm plans to build a new warehousing and sales facility.
The cabling giant currently employs 46 staff at its nearby Milton Keynes base, servicing the South-East coast including Lincolnshire, Peterborough and Cambridge.
Cleveland Cable’s global business manager Michael Powell said: “At a time of looming recession and mass redundancy in the UK, this new build represents an £8m investment for Cleveland Cable.
Architectural plans for the 44,000-sq ft depot with secure storage yard in the Sixfields area of Northampton have been drafted and submitted to the local council for planning approval.
“It will provide new jobs in both the design and build of the premises and in the additional employees that will be needed to service such a large warehousing complex.
“The custom-built facility will be the new base of operations for our current Milton Keynes branch, which will be relocating there.
“This provides a muchneeded, larger footprint for storage facilities and the transport requirements of this highly successful depot, as well bringing us closer to the Midlands, from where we can service our renewables, road and rail contracts more effectively.
“The existing Milton Keynes property will be transferred to Cable Properties and Investments to be retained in the company’s property portfolio.
The property will then be let off and subsequently managed by the properties team, based in our Middlesbrough headquarters.”
The plot is within a prime industrial, retail and leisure park to the west of Milton Keynes town centre and close to the M1.
The site was first developed in 1994 and also hosts the 7,800-seat PTS Academy Stadium, home of Northampton Town Football Club. Sixfields also hosts out-of-town shopping, restaurants and entertainment facilities.
Founded in 1978, Cleveland Cable Company exports cables and cable accessories throughout the world and is a key supplier to healthcare, road, rail, utilities and construction sectors.
The firm is incredibly proud of its Teesside roots and retains its head office on Middlesbrough’s Riverside Park industrial estate alongside eight locations across the UK and Ireland, including branches in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle, Warrington, London, Bristol and Dublin, while a branch in Dubai serves the market in the United Arab Emirates.
