Chartered accountancy firm Baines Jewitt has welcomed 19-year-old Lewis Poppleton from Norton to join its practice.

Prior to starting work at Baines Jewitt, Lewis was studying A-Levels in Maths, Accounting and Economics at Durham Sixth Form Centre. He is delighted to have secured his first professional job as a trainee accounting technician.

“I’d been thinking about accountancy as a career for a while, so I sent some speculative letters to several firms in the local area,” he said.

“I was really pleased when Baines Jewitt got in touch to offer me a work experience placement.

“Not only did this confirm that accountancy was the right career choice, but it was an opportunity to get to know everyone at Baines Jewitt and for them to get to know me.

“What’s more, the work placement has progressed into a fantastic job opportunity with the chance to gain professional qualifications in my chosen field.”

As a trainee accounting technician, Lewis is involved in helping with accounts preparation and VAT returns.

He is also studying towards the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 3 qualification as part of his professional training programme.

Baines Jewitt director Anne Cowley said: “Although Baines Jewitt is a well-established business, which was named among the top practices in the country by the UK200Group – the UK’s leading association of independent chartered accountants and law firms – we understand the importance of not resting on our laurels, planning for the future and investing in the next generation of professionals.

“We strongly believe in recruiting local talent and developing the skills of all our employees.

“We are therefore delighted that Lewis chose Baines Jewitt to begin his accountancy career.”
